We have no idea how to best insulate our piteched garage roof and we're freezing everytime we walk into the grarage. Does anyone have a pitched garage roof and how did you insulate it?

You need to use PIR/PUR tightly between the joists to ensure there are no airgaps. If you have airgaps around the edges of the boards you lose all that you gained with the insulation. You can also use mineral wool insulations for tight insulation with no leakage. description

There should be a 50 mm air gap between the insulation and the sarking so you don't have any condensation build up. So for a pitched garage roof I'd use the counter battens with a gap for your breathable membrane to drape. description

What about using some batt insulation hung without a drywall air barrier or if you need to the same batt insulation with the air barrier. You could always dense pack the wall of a new build and leave the top foot of drywall off. Then cut holes in the wall after it's hung or use some sort of plastic membrane before the sheetrock is hung before you put in the batt insulation for the biggest bang for your buck. description

There are two different types of insulation and while you stated its cold when you go in your garage - we need to know where you live. The two different methods of insulating a roof that vary on the basis of roof structure and whether you need to insulte above or between the rafters to avoid heat loss and energy transfer.

Get yourself some great ventilation and use proper vents on the underside of the sheathing. Then use high-density, eight-inch fiberglass batts . Cover them with a four- or six-mil poly-vapor barrier. description
