My wife and I are building a cabin, and we think a timber pitched roof would be spectacular. The only problem is we have no idea how to do this and where to even start. Does anyone have any helpful hints that could assist us as we go ahead and get started with this project?

My number one tip for you would be to hire a professional roofer. There's more than 120,000 roofers out there working in the U.S. everyday, as confirmed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and I'm sure you could find someone to help you for a reasonable price. I admire how you want to get this work done and know what you're doing, but if you're unfamiliar with a timber pitched roof it's best that you get someone in there to help you.

Are you sure you want to be doing this by yourself? I'm all for DIY and stuff but a timber pitched roof is kind of a big deal. You don't want to jump in the deep end and sink just because you didn't want to accept any help. I learned this the hard way, and my personal experience makes me want to warn you to hire a roofer sooner rather than later. Just think about all the experience these professionals have, and how much that could help you as you make your roof.

Sure, the finished product looks amazing, I agree with you on that. But making a timber pitched roof isn't easy. You don't see whether you're a handyman or have extensive building experience, but if you aren't totally sure of what you're doing, I would hire a roofer instead. This is a massive major project and you want to get it done right the first time around. You can learn a lot from watching the right roofing team, I know I did.

I put a timber pitched roof on our garage a few years back. The ridge, rafter, joist are key. If you're unfamiliar with these parts of a roof, I would read up and get a feel for them before you actually begin. If you feel like you're getting in over your head, just hire a roofer. It sure beats making some major mistakes on your home that end up costing you a lot.
