The roof on my home is old and starting to leak. It is a flat roof and I’m not sure if the entire roof needs to be replaced or if I just need to have it repaired. I have a friend who said that I may need to put a flat membrane roof on the house since it’s flat. What’s a flat membrane roof and is it something that I need a professional roofer to install or can I do it myself?

A membrane roof can make your roof waterproof, but it has to be installed the right way. Roofers can let you know what you’ll have to pay for them to do the repairs for you and let you know how bad the issue really is. They can often give you a few options to determine which one is the best for your particular situation.

A flat roof allows water to pool and it can create leaks. A membrane can be placed on the roof to create a watertight barrier to keep water from leaking into your home. If you haven’t done any roofing in the past, you shouldn’t try to attach the membrane because you could cause more damage than good.

When I had damage to my flat roof I used description to learn about the different roofing options that were available. I determined that advancements had been made in roofing and that a membrane roof was the best option for me. The roofers were able to install it in just a few days and I haven’t had any issues with leaking since it’s been installed.

I found that for many roofing issues a patch job works fine. If it’s only leaking in once place you can get a patch kit at a local home improvement store and use it to do the repairs. If there are a lot of leaks, you should just have the roof replaced and add a membrane roof. You would have to add it to your entire roof, not just a small area in order for it to be as effective as possible.
