We have a leak in our roof and the roofer is telling us that they need to replace our entire roof because it has shingles on it. He said that we have what is considered a flat roof, but it has a really small pitch to it. I thought that a flat roof didn’t have a pitch at all, but he says they have a slight pitch. What is the pitch of a roof that’s considered to be a flat roof?

If you have a roof that is leaking, you need to have the repairs done a quickly as possible. Flat roofs typically have very little pitch to them. You probably can’t even tell if it has one when you look at it. The roofer will know how to tell if it has enough pitch to be considered a pitched roof or not.

If you have shingles on a flat roof the roof was installed improperly. You can’t just patch shingles on a flat roof, or you will have leaks again in the future. Some flat roofs have a small pitch to them, but it isn’t enough to allow for easy drainage which means it has to be protected properly with a membrane or specific materials to make it waterproof.

It shouldn’t be too hard to tell if your home has a flat roof or a pitched roof on it. Look at the side of the home and see if it has a huge triangle shape at the top. If they do, then you have a pitch on the roof. If it is nearly flat, you have a flat roof.

According to description a roof that has a pitch of 10 degrees or less is considered to be a flat roof. The slight pitch isn’t enough to allow water to easily drain off of it so shingles shouldn’t be used on it. They will not create the waterproof barrier that is needed and thus allow leaks to develop.
